UPDATE : THE EVENT WAS A GREAT SUCSESS . OUR TEAM'S GOAL WAS ACHIVED AND THEN SOME ! THE GOAL WAS $3,000.00 , WE RAISED OVER $4,700.00 . THE WALK BROUGHT IN OVER $250,000.00 ! I'd like to talk to you about my daughter . She's a bright young beautiful young girl . Last year she cut all her hair off for children with cancer . Two years ago , last January , she was diagnosed with diabetes . Type 1 , some people call juvenile diabetes . She tests her blood six to eight times a day and has three or four shots , of three types of insulin a day . She takes insulin to maintain her blood sugar levels the blood test tell us how much insulin she needs and how much carbohydrates she needs to eat . My daughter needs to be on a strict diet , we need to read every label to regulate her carbohydrates intake . We must do this six times a day . She must eat everyday at the same time of day and the same amount of carbohydrates every time each day . The reason we must do this is she can go screaming high on her blood sugar and end up in the hospital in a coma , or her blood sugar could go straight down and she would go into a coma ."Does that sound confusing" ? It is ! But we maintain it everyday of our lives . I say "we" because it's a family event not just "hers" . She does most of this herself now , she's nine . My wife and myself must check her insulin and her diet , but she's doing it herself . She rarely screws up ! She also wants no one to feel sorry for her . So please , if your going to comment don't leave condolences . This year my daughter was chosen as an ambassador for the "JDRF walk" in our area . You wouldn't believe her . She stands up in auditoriums and gives speeches about her inflection . She is an amazing public speaker , absolutely no fear . She had presidents of very large corporations in aw and lined up to meet her after her speech . Did I say I'm proud of her ? I am , we are , our whole family is !
When she was diagnosed two and a half years ago , she cried once and that was it ! She never feels sorry for herself , she just deals with it . My wife and I have worries , especially about her long term illness . Will she maintain this rosy outlook or will she rebel and go off her diet . If that happens she could have major repercussions . Heart diseases, liver failure , kidney failure , stroke , loss of limbs ...Endless repercussions !
OK all of that aside . Now the reason I'm writing this piece "out of character" . Things are happening . "new" developments in a cure for diabetes . Stem cells seem to be one answer (Thanks George Bush , for nothing !) also in artificial pancreases... A number of good developments...GREAT ! Here's the catch . We need money...Still there ? Really everybody needs money . But Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation , is a good cause .With a cure for diabetes we can stop 1) A lot of heart related deaths , 2) Needless operations , 3) and most importantly...Children suffering from this disease !
This mouth and in the month of June there will be organized "JDRF walks" around your area . Please participate or please donate to these walks . It will be highly appreciated . Thank You .

She sounds like a wonderful young lady. I know how you feel and what you go through. My brother is also diabetic.
I can completely relate to this. My father has type I diabetes. He has been in and out of hospitals numerous times throughout my life. I have seen him so sick I thought I may never see him again. It's scary as shit. It must be even more scary to be her parent.
She sounds amazing and strong just like her father.

Wally, I'll be honest and let you know I probably won't take part in the walk. What I do do is volunteer every year with a Lasangna dinner fund raiser (a local event) that benifits the ADA and spend time before hand attracting people to attend. Last year, it takes place in September, the event raised about $20,000. That's not much when considering the big picture, but it helps.
I do other volunteer work for Thoughts for Food. It's a benifit for the food pantry that takes place the first Saturday in March. This past march was the 14th annual. I'm not sure of the totals, but a lot of food was donated and even more money.
Not for a few years, but I've also tutored English in the past. Volunteer of course. I spread my charity out, mostly with volunteering because I'm not rich.
That is fuck'n amazing Toby ! Just keep up the good work , your do'n your part . If more people took that kind of initiative in volunteer work North America will be a better place to live . Keep it up and good luck this year !

my 36 year old niece is type 1 diabetic. She was diagnosed at 7 years. She is 36 now & is back East at a big hospital waiting for a kidney transplant. we have donated money to Juvenile Diabetes Research for many years. You know they do come up with new things all the time.

I>t hopefully the future is now . My uncle had a very short life because of diabetes and a lack of discipline . We loved him very much but he drank and smoked . You can't do those things when your diabetic ! But he chose to live fast . Does that sound like someone else ? Ya I got a little of his genies . My prayers are that my daughter will not take her health in vain . Last year she did a speech on Bobby Clarke a famous hockey player . He takes very good care of himself and is a type 1 diabetic . He looks fantastic and is near 55 . From what I hear is was one of the first to wear a pump .
We're praying for your aunt to receive the kidney she needs and good luck to her . Tell her my daughter said be strong and watch a lot of "Family Guy" ! I don't know what that means , but OK ?
