The Scientology Expose We've Been Waiting For

New Yorker staff writer and Looming Tower author Lawrence Wright is writing what his agent calls "the most profound reckoning to date" with Scientology, told through the eyes of director and apostate Paul Haggis. This should be good.
Haggis spent 35 years as a Scientologist before angrily and publicly ditching the cult in 2009 after he became convinced that leader David Miscavige is a violent nut. He hasn't spoken publicly about Scientology since, but a "blown" celebrity (to use the Scientological term for leaving the fold) like Haggis is Scientology's worst possible nightmare—it can smear and threaten rank-and-file detractors all it wants, but when one of its former leading lights is making the charges, it's harder to strike back.


Wright is a meticulous and muscular reporter, so the two men collaborating to tell the story of Scientology from the inside will be a very big deal. The book, which doesn't have a publisher yet, will be called The Heretic of Hollywood: Paul Haggis vs.The Church of Scientology and will explore both founder L. Ron Hubbard's life and Haggis' personal investigation into Miscavige's violence, the enslavement of "Sea Org" volunteers, and forced abortions for church workers, according to a catalog from Wright's agent Andrew Wylie [pdf] that was pointed out to us by a tipster. Wright has mentioned the project before in interviews, and indicated that it grew out of a New Yorker story that hasn't yet run.


It will be interesting to see whether Scientology's counterintelligence and disinformation machinery will be up to the challenge of undermining a project like this: Back in the 1970s, the cult actually managed to infiltrate the private life of Paulette Cooper, author of The Scandal of Scientology, with a stooge acting as her best friend in a failed effort to frame her and drive her to suicide. So Wright might want to be careful about making any new friends for the next few years.

"The Academy Award winning writer and director, Paul Haggis (Million Dollar Baby, Crash), spent three decades in the Church of Scientology. Haggis was one of the church's Hollywood trophies, along with Tom Cruise and John Travolta, whose paths cross with Haggis's. His resignation from the church in August of 2009 was a crushing disappointment to the organization. This is the first time Haggis has spoken about his experience.

The roots of Scientology are explored in this book, particularly the life of its eccentric founder, L. Ron Hubbard, whose flashes of brilliance and insanity are woven into the fabric of this elaborate belief system. Through Haggis's eyes, we discover the appeal of Scientology, especially to talented and ambitious members of the entertainment industry. Haggis conducted a personal investigation of the church, in which he was told about the wanton physical abuse on the part of its current leader, David Miscavige, of senior members of the organization. He was told that young volunteers in the Scientology clergy, called the Sea Org, are subjected to conditions approaching slavery or imprisonment, and that many female members have been forced to have abortions.

The most profound reckoning to date with this powerful and secretive organization, The Heretic of Hollywood is also a moving human story of the lure of extreme faith and the price of leaving it."

Scientologists Hire Pulitzer and Emmy Winners to 'Investigate' Enemies

The 'church' do not like the St. Petersburg Times. Because the Florida paper has an excellent, and ongoing, series of investigations into the various weirdnesses of Cruise and Co. So they've hired three surprisingly legit journalists to investigate them right back. Howard Kurtz, in the Washington Post, reports that the cult hired Steve Weinberg, the former executive director of non-profit Investigative Reporters and Editors, Russell Carollo, who won a Pulitzer in 1998 for a series on medical malpractice that appeared in the Daily News of Dayton, Ohio, and Christopher Szechenyi, an Emmy-winning former TV producer. (They possibly saw this job advertisement.)

The three men, one of whom admitted he could "certainly use the money these days," were hired to look at the journalistic practices that went into the Times reporting. Except the Times refused to co-operate. "I ultimately couldn't take this request very seriously because it's a study bought and paid for by the Church of Scientology," Executive Editor Neil Brown told Kurtz. "I was surprised and disappointed that journalists who I understand to have an extensive background in investigative reporting would think it's appropriate to ask me or our news organization to talk about that reporting while (a) it's ongoing, and (b) while they're being paid to ask these questions by the very subjects of our reporting."

Which sums the whole thing up really.

Anonymous Pledge to Fight Scientologist Efforts in Haiti

Anonymous, the internet-based group that has waged sporadic wars on Scientology over the last two years, has released a new letter. Prompted, apparently, by the fawning Today Show piece on Scientologists in Haiti they intend to act. The group, given to wearing V for Vendetta Guy Fawkes masks, and pictured above during widely publized protests against the church in 2008, released this message.

Hello [audience]. We are Anonymous.

We wish it it were under more favorable circumstances that we have chosen to address the world. However, after the demonstrably inaccurate interpretation handling of the victims of the Haiti earthquake as per the work of the Scientology 'Volunteer' Ministers, Anonymous could not remain silent.

The Volunteer Ministers are volunteers only in name. Their self-proclaimed humanitarian efforts have been shown to be harmful and self-serving time and time again. In the wake of the September Eleventh attacks at the World Trade Center, they impeded the work of the New York City Fire Department, and falsely claimed to have been given a reward for their efforts. These efforts involved little more than handing out pamphlets for the works of L. Ron Hubbard, while intentionally hindering the work of mental health professionals aiding the victims.

This same pattern of self-promotion at the expense of victims of disasters does not end there. Following the tsunami at Sri Lanka, the Volunteer Ministers attempted to convert the vulnerable and suffering victims into their cult, promising them aid and salvation at the expense of their livelihood***. These actions were repeated following the terrorist attack at the Ramada Inn in India*** and the Subway bombings in London, England.

In short: Scientology does not see a disaster as a tragedy, but rather, as a business opportunity.

First-hand accounts condemnations from legitimate aid groups, and even leaked documents from Scientology's corporate heirarchy itself all confirm the cowardly and parasitic nature of the self-proclaimed Volunteer Ministers.

The very same self-serving, opportunistic proselytizing has been taking place in Haiti. Scientology has taken every opportunity to release their own manufactured press releases, taking credit for the work of legitimate relief groups. They arrived completely unprepared and were told to leave by the United States military

An untrained Scientologist was alleged to be assisting a surgeon, using tools that had not been sterilized. This is blatant medical malpractice. John Travolta has also left several trained medical professionals behind at an airport, instead making it his priority to bring untrained Scientologists into the country with the sole intent of disseminating L. Ron Hubbard materials to an already vulnerable and suffering population.

Know this, Scientology: We are watching you. With every move you make, every victim you exploit, and every piece of choreographed propaganda you release into the mainstream media, the public already knows the truth about your organization. You are not fooling anyone, and no amount of proselytizing will change this. You have already been convicted in the court of public opinion. It is now only a matter of time before you are convicted in a court of law.

We are Anonymous.
We are Legion.
We do not forgive.
We do not forget.
Expect us.

On a separate note, we hear rumors that the church may be starting an orphanage in Haiti. The rumblings come from chatter activists have flagged up on Scientology messageboards and remain unconfirmed.

Will Travolta Leave Scientology?

There's a rumor going around that one of Scientology's most powerful proponents, John Travolta, is looking to leave the draconian religion once and for all. After the year he's had, it would make sense.

According to the Daily Mail - who rounded up some interesting quotes on the matter - it appears to be a very real possibility. To say Travolta's had a rough go of it recently would be putting it very, very lightly.

On the business side of things, Travolta's big role this year performed under studio expectations. An complete aside, when you consider his personal life:

His son Jett - reportedly autistic, a diagnosis the Church of Scientology refuses to dignify - passed away earlier this year. Travolta defied Scientology and acknowledged it. Some sleazy gossip website put together a theory that enlists the idea of Travolta not only having a gay lover, but the gay lover - his son's nanny - being a primary cause of his son's death. Which is besides the fact that someone tried to extort him over documents involved in his son's transportation, and his wife might've tried (successfully) to get Roger Friedman fired by going to the top brass at Fox over Friedman's comments on Scientology.

All of this gives the Daily Mail's report some ground to walk on, when they note:

His distress, say sources close to him, has been compounded by the first cracks in his 34-year relationship with the Church of Scientology, the cult-like religion of which Travolta is a prominent and generous benefactor. And there are dark mutterings that if he carries out private threats to leave, the organisation will go public with embarrassing details of his private life, including, it is claimed, allegations of past homosexual relationships. Sources in the U.S. disclosed to me this week that his son's sudden death has 'deeply shaken' Travolta's faith in the strange sect, which makes wild claims about its ability to cure a variety of physical and mental disorders.

There's more talk of Travolta taking late night drives by himself, and being in a "state of constant distress." There's the very evident weight Travolta's gained. There's the memory of Scientology's scary-ass leader David Miscavage slagging on Travolta's sexuality:

Earlier, the prestigious Time magazine also reported allegations made by Richard Aznaran, the former security head of Scientology, that the Church's leader, David Miscavige, had repeatedly joked about Travolta's 'promiscuous homosexual behaviour'.

And then there's the fact that Scientology has a well known history of intimidation of the physical and emotional stripe. This goes without saying, but: Travolta's donated millions of dollars, and what could only be thousands of hours to the church throughout his life. Shit, he made Battlefield Earth.

For a celebrity of Travolta's stature to renounce Scientology would be massive, for both parties. Even rumors of Travolta's potential departure from the religion are pretty damning. Granted, it'll be a difficult path if he chooses to take it - the resistance he'll encounter from the highest levels of the religion are potentially fiscally, emotionally, and physically dangerous to his livelihood - but one that could shake Scientology to its absolute core.

Plus the fact that The Daily Mail has been hit'n on all cylinders lately. This story ha huge weight. When or if this is to come to pass, look for the biggest story of the year, at lest for celebrities. This report will destroy the Jackson story with a million back stories. I find it both disturbing and quite flattering that "Da Church" would take notice of Lil'o'Me, DaWallycrawler, I'm totally harmless, I am, really I am. But they might think otherwise? They did slap ads on my blog early Monday morning.
It's easy to get rid of the rascals, but it makes me sick that they could do that & so fast!

According to a Bahamian police report taken in February after his son Jett's death last year, Travolta acknowledged in his own words that "Jett suffered from a seizure disorder and was autistic." That's a big no-no in Scientology.

The report was obtained by the National Enquirer. Travolta's use of the term "autistic" seems to be a break from church doctrine, which teaches that psychiatric diagnoses are fake ailments invented by Nazi psychiatrists so they can give people drugs to keep them from realizing their true potential of controlling the physical world with their minds.

Prior to Jett's death, his mother Kelly Preston attributed his problems to a rare disorder called Kawasaki disease and to "environmental toxins" from carpet-cleaners. She claimed that a Scientological detoxification regime had helped to ease his symptoms.

After Jett's death, Scientology representatives denied that the church has taken a stance on autism, saying, "It's medicine. The church deals with the spirit. If people have a medical problem or a physical ailment, they go to a doctor. It's church policy that they do so and they get that addressed." But autism is a psychiatric disorder described in DSM-IV, psychiatry's diagnostic bible. While a case could be made that Travolta was only using the term generally, to describe a disorder with physical roots that he thought could be explained, Scientology-style, by toxins, it's certainly unusual for a high-profile representative of the church to use the word.

Freedom of speech called into question during downtown ‘Anonymous’ Scientology protest

This past Sunday, members of the group 'Anonymous' protested the practices of the Church of Scientology around the world. The Internet-based group claims that the Church is financially and morally unethical, while a Church press release calls Anonymous "a group of cyber-terrorists."
"We are here to protest the Church of Scientology. Why? Because no one should fear free speech."
This text graced the front of a tri-folded informational pamphlet, one of the dozens of papers handed out by Anonymous at the Buffalo protest. The demonstration was held across the street from 836 Main Street, the location of the Church of Scientology (CoS) Buffalo.
"We're totally for freedom of speech," said Sue Hawley, community services director for CoS Buffalo. "Whatever you want to protest about is totally fine. Anonymous has said that they are for freedom of speech...they've interrupted freedom of speech."
Feb. 10 was to be an international day of protest for Anonymous against the CoS. Anonymous calls the protests "raids," which take place outside major CoS locations in North America, South America, Europe, Australia and Asia. Participants were directed to wear masks in most locations; however, masks are illegal in New York.
"We are protesting the corporation of the Church of Scientology," said one protestor, wishing to remain anonymous. "We just don't want them to exploit their members."
According to Anonymous' pamphlet, "CoS members must pay for work for the Church to gain higher levels of spiritual awareness, forcing many members into tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt."
The protestors went on to describe Operating Thetan levels - pyramid spiritual states that CoS members can achieve based on their level of monetary donations. Chuck Beatty, a former Scientologist of 27 years and resident of Carnegie, Pa., said that once a person donates a certain amount of money, they're supposed to have an out of body experience. During his membership in the CoS, Beatty was identified as an SP, or a suppressive person.
"I was suppressively reasonable," Beatty said. He went on to describe how the CoS has taken on a type of ex-communication policy for SP's.
According to an article on ScientologyEthics.org, SP's, who are considered the antisocial personality types, make up about 2.5 percent of the population.
"There are those among us...who possess characteristics and mental attitudes that cause them to violently oppose any betterment activity or group," the article said.
The article also stated that about 20 percent of the population has some form or connection to an antisocial personality, making them a PTS, potential trouble source.
In a CoS video of Tom Cruise that was leaked on the Internet, the avid Scientologist discussed some of the Church's policies and hopes.
"They said, 'so, like, have you met an SP?'" Cruise said in the video. "And I thought, what a beautiful thing, because maybe one day it'll be like that...wow, SP's, they'll just read about them in the history books."
One of the Anonymous members at the rally claimed that the CoS is largely driven by money, which is one of the reasons that Anonymous is campaigning to have the Church's tax exemption removed.
"Walk in any church, and they will give you a Bible for free. Walk in any mosque and they will give you a Qur'an," he said. "Scientologists will wait for your check to clear."
For 25 years, the IRS considered the CoS a commercial entity. After a series of lawsuits filed by the CoS against the IRS, the Church gained tax-exempt status, according to an Anonymous flyer. The CoS is still considered a commercial entity in Germany.
Hawley emphasized the CoS's humanitarian efforts, saying that they won't let the actions of Anonymous "stop [them] from doing the good works that [they] do."
"I work with children on a huge anti-drug campaign, our human rights campaign," Hawley said. "Human Rights International is a non-profit group that is trying to get the United Nations' declaration of human rights taught in schools. I'm out there pounding the pavement trying to get that done."
She went on to say that the CoS aims to have "a world without criminality." In accordance with CoS Founder L. Ron Hubbard's wishes, the Church also strives for positive communication around the world through missionary and tolerance movements, accord to the CoS Web site.
On the other hand, Hawley explained Anonymous' illegal activities that are being investigated by the FBI.
According to a CoS press release, Anonymous has "engaged in other harassment including threats of violence in telephone calls, fax transmissions and e-mails, not to mention the Anonymous mailing of white powder to dozens of our Churches, requiring the services of law enforcement."
"What's happened on the Internet, what's happening with Anonymous is criminal," Hawley said.
There were four, unarmed Buffalo Police officers at the Buffalo CoS on Sunday, while the parishioners were there for the 11 a.m. service. Hawley said that "numerous threats" had been made. Nevertheless, more worshippers than normal had shown up, in part, to defend their church.
"I want people to be safe and I want freedom," Hawley said.
Anonymous will next be seen in action on March 15, celebrating L. Ron Hubbard's birthday. March 13 is Hubbard's actual birthday - a day of celebration for Scientologists around the world.
"We also wish to show that we can be beings of kindness and compassion as well. We in no way wish to protest the beliefs of Scientology, or the Scientologists themselves. If they so wish, they are welcome to come out of their cages and make merry with us. The gifts we bear will be those of knowledge, reason, and free speech," an Anonymous Web site said of the celebration.
