There's no doubt that Joe Paterno is a successful NCAA football coach. Maybe the best of all time? I understand he would have a following, but if he had any knowledge of da child molestation offences that have been charged against former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky and did not report them to authorities, or even worse helped sweep these offences under the rug? He not only should be fired, he and the Penn State authorities should also be charged with obstruction of justice. Law suits will be filed, I'm sure. Some of these young boys, now young men, have already been paid-off. In his own words Joe Paterno was quoted as saying, "...it's a tough life when people do certain things to you." Yes it is Joe, yes it is. And you Joe knew about those "certain things" and you chose not to mention those "things"!

In the days after Steve Jobs' death, friends and colleagues have, in customary fashion, been sharing their fondest memories of the Apple co-founder. He's been hailed as "a genius" and "the greatest CEO of his generation" by pundits and tech journalists. But a great man's reputation can withstand a full accounting. And, truth be told, Jobs could be terrible to people, and his impact on the world was not uniformly positive.
We mentioned much of the good Jobs did during his career earlier. His accomplishments were far-reaching and impossible to easily summarize. But here's one way of looking at the scope of his achievement: It's the dream of any entrepreneur to affect change in one industry. Jobs transformed half a dozen of them forever, from personal computers to phones to animation to music to publishing to video games. He was a polymath, a skilled motivator, a decisive judge, a farsighted tastemaker, an excellent showman, and a gifted strategist.
One thing he wasn't, though, was perfect. Indeed there were things Jobs did while at Apple that were deeply disturbing. Rude, dismissive, hostile, spiteful: Apple employees—the ones not bound by confidentiality agreements—have had a different story to tell over the years about Jobs and the bullying, manipulation and fear that followed him around Apple. Jobs contributed to global problems, too. Apple's success has been built literally on the backs of Chinese workers, many of them children and all of them enduring long shifts and the specter of brutal penalties for mistakes. And, for all his talk of enabling individual expression, Jobs imposed paranoid rules that centralized control of who could say what on his devices and in his company.
It's particularly important to take stock of Jobs' flaws right now. His successor, Tim Cook, has the opportunity to set a new course for the company, and to establish his own style of leadership. And, thanks to Apple's success, students of Jobs' approach to leadership have never been so numerous in Silicon Valley. He was worshipped and emulated plenty when he was alive; in death, Jobs will be even more of an icon.
After celebrating Jobs' achievements, we should talk freely about the dark side of Jobs and the company he co-founded. Here, then, is a catalog of lowlights:

Censorship and AuthoritarianismThe internet allowed people around the world to express themselves more freely and more easily. With the App Store, Apple reversed that progress. The iPhone and iPad constitute the most popular platform for handheld computerizing in America, key venues for media and software. But to put anything on the devices, you need Apple's permission. And the company wields its power aggressively.

In the name of protecting children from the evils of erotica — "freedom from porn" — and adults from one another, Jobs has banned from being installed on his devices gay art, gay travel guides, political cartoons, sexy pictures, Congressional candidate pamphlets, political caricature, Vogue fashion spreads, systems invented by the opposition, and other things considered morally suspect.

Apple's devices have connected us to a world of information. But they don't permit a full expression of ideas. Indeed, the people Apple supposedly serves — "the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers" — have been particularly put out by Jobs' lockdown. That America's most admired company has followed such an un-American path, and imposed centralized restrictions typical of the companies it once mocked, is deeply disturbing.

But then Jobs never seemed comfortable with the idea of fully empowered workers or a truly free press. Inside Apple, there is a culture of fear and control around communication; Apple's "Worldwide Loyalty Team" specializes in hunting down leakers, confiscating mobile phones and searching computers.

Apple applies coercive tactics to the press, as well. Its first response to stories it doesn't like is typically manipulation and badgering, for example, threatening to withhold access to events and executives. Next, it might leak a contradictory story.

But Apple doesn't stop there. It has a fearsome legal team that is not above annihilating smaller prey. In 2005, for example, the company sued 19-year-old blogger Nick Ciarelli for correctly reporting, prior to launch, the existence of the Mac Mini. The company did not back down until Ciarelli agreed to close his blog ThinkSecret forever. Last year, after our sister blog Gizmodo ran a video of a prototype iPhone 4, Apple complained to law enforcement, who promptly raided an editor's home.

And just last month, in the creepiest example of Apple's fascist tendencies, two of Apple's private security agents searched the home of a San Francisco man and threatened him and his family with immigration trouble as part of an scramble for a missing iPhone prototype. The man said the security agents were accompanied by plainclothes police and did not identify themselves as private citizens, lending the impression they were law enforcement officers.

Sweatshops, Child Labor and Human Rights:

Apple's factories in China have regularly employed young teenagers and people below the legal work age of 16, made people work grueling hours, and have tried to cover all this up. That's according to Apple's own 2010 report about its factories in China. In 2011, Apple reported that its child labor problem had worsened.

In 2010, the Daily Mail managed to get a reporter inside a facility in China that manufactures products for Apple and the paper shared a bit about what life is like:

With the complex at peak production, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week to meet the global demand for Apple phones and computers, a typical day begins with the Chinese national anthem being played over loudspeakers, with the words: 'Arise, arise, arise, millions of hearts with one mind.'
As part of this Orwellian control, the public address system constantly relays propaganda, such as how many products have been made; how a new basketball court has been built for the workers; and why workers should 'value efficiency every minute, every second'.
With other company slogans painted on workshop walls - including exhortations to 'achieve goals unless the sun no longer rises' and to 'gather all of the elite and Foxconn will get stronger and stronger' - the employees work up to 15-hour shifts.
Down narrow, prison-like corridors, they sleep in cramped rooms in triple-decked bunk beds to save space, with simple bamboo mats for mattresses.
Despite summer temperatures hitting 35 degrees, with 90 per cent humidity, there is no air-conditioning. Workers say some dormitories house more than 40 people and are infested with ants and cockroaches, with the noise and stench making it difficult to sleep.

A company can be judged by how it treats its lowliest workers. It sets an example for the rest of the company or in Apple's case, the world.

"Wally: This isn't da half of it!"

In Person and At Home;

Before he was deposed from Apple the first time around, Jobs already had a reputation internally for acting like a tyrant. Jobs regularly belittled people, swore at them, and pressured them until they reached their breaking point. In the pursuit of greatness he cast aside politeness and empathy. His verbal abuse never stopped. Just last month Fortune reported about a half-hour "public humiliation" Jobs doled out to one Apple team:

"Can anyone tell me what MobileMe is supposed to do?" Having received a satisfactory answer, he continued, "So why the fuck doesn't it do that?"
"You've tarnished Apple's reputation," he told them. "You should hate each other for having let each other down."

Jobs ended by replacing the head of the group, on the spot.
In his book about Jobs' time at NeXT and return to Apple, The Second Coming of Steve Jobs, Alan Deutschman described Jobs' rough treatment of underlings:

He would praise and inspire them, often in very creative ways, but he would also resort to intimidating, goading, berating, belittling, and even humiliating them... When he was Bad Steve, he didn't seem to care about the severe damage he caused to egos or emotions... suddenly and unexpectedly, he would look at something they were working on say that it "sucked," it was "shit."

Jobs had his share of personal shortcomings, too. He has no public record of giving to charity over the years, despite the fact he became wealthy after Apple's 1980 IPO and had accumulated an estimated $7 billion net worth by the time of his death. After closing Apple's philanthropic programs on his return to Apple in 1997, he never reinstated them, despite the company's gusher of profits.

It's possible Jobs has given to charity anonymously, or that he will posthumously, but he has hardly embraced or encouraged philanthropy in the manner of, say, Bill Gates, who pledged $60 billion to charity and who joined with Warren Buffet to push fellow billionaires to give even more.
"He clearly didn't have the time," is what the director of Jobs' short-lived charitable foundation told the New York Times. That sounds about right. Jobs did not lead a balanced life. He was professionally relentless. He worked long hours, and remained CEO of Apple through his illness until six weeks before he died. The result was amazing products the world appreciates. But that doesn't mean Jobs' workaholic regimen is one to emulate.
There was a time when Jobs actively fought the idea of becoming a family man. He had his daughter Lisa out of wedlock at age 23 and, according to Fortune, spent two years denying paternity, even declaring in court papers "that he couldn't be Lisa's father because he was 'sterile and infertile, and as a result thereof, did not have the physical capacity to procreate a child.'" Jobs eventually acknowledged paternity, met and married his wife, now widow, Laurene Powell, and had three more children. Lisa went to Harvard and is now a writer.

Steve Jobs created many beautiful objects. He made digital devices more elegant and easier to use. He made a lot of money for Apple Inc. after people wrote it off for dead. He will undoubtedly serve as a role model for generations of entrepreneurs and business leaders. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing depends on how honestly his life is appraised.

Da Toyota Prius Aint Enviromentaly Sound: BIG SURPISE!

Prius Outdoes Hummer in Environmental Damage By Chris Demorro Staff

The Toyota Prius has become the flagship car for those in our
society so environmentally conscious that they are willing to spend a
premium to show the world how much they care. Unfortunately for them,
their ultimate 'green car' is the source of some of the worst
pollution in North America; it takes more combined energy per Prius to
produce than a Hummer.
Before we delve into the seedy underworld of hybrids, you must first
understand how a hybrid works. For this, we will use the most popular
hybrid on the market, the Toyota Prius.
The Prius is powered by not one, but two engines: a standard 76
horsepower, 1.5-liter gas engine found in most cars today and a
battery- powered engine that deals out 67 horsepower and a whooping
295ft/lbs of torque, below 2000 revolutions per minute. Essentially,
the Toyota Synergy Drive system, as it is so called, propels the car
from a dead stop to up to 30mph. This is where the largest percent of
gas is consumed. As any physics major can tell you, it takes more
energy to get an object moving than to keep it moving. The battery is
recharged through the braking system, as well as when the gasoline
engine takes over anywhere north of 30mph. It seems like a great
energy efficient and environmentally sound car, right?
You would be right if you went by the old government EPA estimates,
which netted the Prius an incredible 60 miles per gallon in the city
and 51 miles per gallon on the highway. Unfortunately for Toyota, the
government realized how unrealistic their EPA tests were, which
consisted of highway speeds limited to 55mph and acceleration of only
3.3 mph per second. The new tests which affect all 2008 models give a
much more realistic rating with highway speeds of 80mph and
acceleration of 8mph per second. This has dropped the Prius's EPA down
by 25 per cent to an average of 45mpg. This now puts the Toyota within
spitting distance of cars like the Chevy Aveo, which costs less then
half what the Prius costs.
However, if that was the only issue with the Prius, I wouldn't be
writing this article. It gets much worse.
Building a Toyota Prius causes more environmental damage than a Hummer
that is on the road for three times longer than a Prius. As already
noted, the Prius is partly driven by a battery which contains nickel.
The nickel is mined and smelted at a plant in Sudbury, Ontario. This
plant has caused so much environmental damage to the surrounding
environment that NASA has used the 'dead zone' around the plant to
test moon rovers. The area around the plant is devoid of any life for
miles.
The plant is the source of all the nickel found in a Prius' battery
and Toyota purchases 1,000 tons annually. Dubbed the Superstack, the
plague-factory has spread sulfur dioxide across northern Ontario,
becoming every en vironmentalist's nightmare. "The acid rain around
Sudbury was so bad it destroyed all the plants and the soil slid down
off the hillside," said Canadian Greenpeace energy-coordinator David
Martin during an interview with Mail, a British-based newspaper.
All of this would be bad enough in and of itself; however, the journey
to make a hybrid doesn't end there. The nickel produced by this
disastrous plant is shipped via massive container ship to the largest
nickel refinery in Europe. From there, the nickel hops over to China
to produce 'nickel foam.' From there, it goes to Japan. Finally, the
completed batteries are shipped to the United States, finalizing the
around-the-world trip required to produce a single Prius battery.
Are these not sounding less and less like environmentally sound cars
and more like a farce?

Wait, I haven't even got to the best part yet.

When you pool together all the combined energy it takes to drive and
build a Toyota Prius, the flagship car of energy fanatics, it takes
almost 50 percent more energy than a Hummer - the Prius's arch
nemesis.
Through a study by CNW Marketing called "Dust to Dust," the total
combined energy is taken from all the electrical, fuel,
transportation, materials (metal, plastic, etc) and hundreds of other
factors over the expected lifetime of a vehicle. The Prius costs an
average of $3.25 per mile driven over a lifetime of 100,000 miles -
the expected lifespan of the Hybrid.
The Hummer, on the other hand, costs a more fiscal $1.95 per mile to
put on the road over an expected lifetime of 300,000 miles. That
means the Hummer will last three times longer than a Prius and use
less combined energy doing it.
So, if you are really an environmentalist - ditch the Prius.
Instead, buy one of the most economical cars available - a Toyota
Scion xB. The Scion only costs a paltry $0.48 per mile to put on the
road. If you are still obsessed over gas mileage - buy a Chevy Aveo
and fix that lead foot.
One last fun fact for you: it takes five years to offset the premium
price of a Prius. Meaning, you have to wait 60 months to save any
money over a non-hybrid car because of lower gas expenses.

That brings me to the Prius's braking problems.... In fact all Hybrids braking problems. After high speeds are obtained.
The cars do not stop!

Why? Because of da sheer weight of da vehicle. This car weights the same as a F150 Pick-up
... or more! With the braking system of a E-Car.

Why buy a Hybrid? Really there's no reason to. Unless you wanna help destroy da environment
& get scammed.

Marvin P. Bush, the president's younger brother, was a principal in a company called Securacom that provided security for the World Trade Center, United Airlines, and Dulles International Airport. The company was backed by KuwAm, a Kuwaiti-American investment firm on whose board Marvin Bush also served.
According to its present CEO, Barry McDaniel, the company had an ongoing contract to handle security at the World Trade Center "up to the day the buildings fell down."

The company lists as government clients "the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S Air force, and the Department of Justice," in projects that "often require state-of-the-art security solutions for classified or high-risk government sites."

Stratesec (Securacom) differs from other security companies which separate the function of consultant from that of service provider. The company defines itself as a "single-source" provider of "end-to-end" security services, including everything from diagnosis of existing systems to hiring subcontractors to installing video and electronic equipment. It also provides armored vehicles and security guards.

The Dulles Internation contract is another matter. Dulles is regarded as "absolutely a sensitive airport," according to security consultant Wayne Black, head of a Florida-based security firm, due to its location, size, and the number of international carriers it serves.

Black has not heard of Stratesec, but responds that for one company to handle security for both airports and airlines is somewhat unusual. It is also delicate for a security firm serving international facilities to be so interlinked with a foreign-owned company: "Somebody knew somebody," he suggested, or the contract would have been more closely scrutinized.

You didn’t see anything about it in the mainstream media, but two weeks ago at a conference in San Francisco, more than one thousand architects and engineers signed a petition demanding that Congress begin a new investigation into the destruction of the three World Trade Center skyscrapers on 9/11.
That’s right, these people put their reputations in potential jeopardy – because they don’t buy the government’s version of events. They want to know how 200,000 tons of steel disintegrated and fell to the ground in 11 seconds. They question whether the hijacked planes were responsible – or whether it could have been a controlled demolition from inside that brought down the Twin Towers and Building 7.
Richard Gage, a member of the American Institute of Architects and the founder of Architects and Engineers for 9-11 Truth, put it like this: “The official Federal Emergency Management [Agency] and National Institute of Standards and Technology reports provide insufficient, contradictory and fraudulent accounts of the circumstances of the towers’ destruction.” He’s especially disturbed by Building 7, whose 47 stories came down in “pure free-fall acceleration” that afternoon – even though it was never hit by an aircraft.
This is a subject I take up in my new book, American Conspiracies , published this week by Skyhorse. An excerpt follows:
Some people have argued that the twin towers went down, within a half hour of one another, because of the way they were constructed. Well, those 425,000 cubic yards of concrete and 200,000 tons of steel were designed to hold up against a Boeing 707, the largest plane built at the time the towers were completed in 1973. Analysis had shown that a 707 traveling at 600 miles an hour (and those had four engines) would not cause major damage. The twin-engine Boeing 757s that hit on 9/11 were going 440 and 550 miles an hour.
Still, we are told that a molten, highly intense fuel mixture from the planes brought down these two steel-framed skyscrapers. Keep in mind that no other such skyscraper in history had ever been known to collapse completely due to fire damage. So could it actually have been the result of a controlled demolition from inside the buildings? I don’t claim expertise about this, but I did work four years as part of the Navy’s underwater demolition teams, where we were trained to blow things to hell and high water. And my staff talked at some length with a prominent physicist, Steven E. Jones, who says that a “gravity driven collapse” without demolition charges defies the laws of physics. These buildings fell, at nearly the rate of free-fall, straight down into their own footprint, in approximately ten seconds. An object dropped from the roof of the 110-story-tall towers would reach the ground in about 9.2 seconds. Then there’s the fact that steel beams that weighed as much as 200,000 pounds got tossed laterally as far as 500 feet.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) started its investigation on August 21, 2002. When their 10,000-page-long report came out three years later, the spokesman said there was no evidence to suggest a controlled demolition. But Steven E. Jones also says that molten metal found underground weeks later is proof that jet fuel couldn’t have been all that was responsible. I visited the site about three weeks after 9/11, with Governor Pataki and my wife Terry. It didn’t mean anything to me at the time, but they had to suspend digging that day because they were running into heat pockets of huge temperatures. These fires kept burning for more than three months, the longest-burning structure blaze ever. And this was all due to jet fuel? We’re talking molten metal more than 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.
Probably the most conclusive evidence about a controlled demolition is a research paper (two years, nine authors) published in the peer-reviewed Open Chemical Physics Journal , in April 2009. In studying dust samples from the site, these scientists found chips of nano-thermite, which is a high-tech incendiary/explosive. Here’s what the paper’s lead author, Dr. Niels Harrit of the University of Copenhagen’s chemistry department, had to say about the explosive that he’s convinced brought down the Twin Towers and the nearby Building 7:
“Thermite itself dates back to 1893. It is a mixture of aluminum and rust-powder, which react to create intense heat. The reaction produces iron, heated to 2500 degrees Centigrade. This can be used to do welding. It can also be used to melt other iron. So in nano-thermite, this powder from 1893 is reduced to tiny particles, perfectly mixed. When these react, the intense heat develops much more quickly. Nano-thermite can be mixed with additives to give off intense heat, or serve as a very effective explosive. It contains more energy than dynamite, and can be used as rocket fuel.” [i]
Richard Gage is one of hundreds of credentialed architects and structural engineers who have put their careers on the line to pointout the detailed anomalies and many implications of controlled demolition in the building collapses. As he puts it bluntly: “Once you get to the science, it’s indisputable.”

Swimmers fear sharks, but are they really the predators we should be worrying about?
If you were keeping score last year, it was 6 to 73 million. The International Shark Attack File says in 2010 six people were killed by sharks.
Now compare that to the estimated 73 million sharks conservation groups say are killed by fishermen each year.
"Shark populations have been declining for 2 decades," says Coastal Carolina University Marine Biologist Rob Young.
He says sharks are killed for their meat, but the majority are being killed in a process called finning.
In parts of China the shark fin is worth a hundred times more than the shark meat itself, which is the driving force why fishermen keep only the fins. "They just catch them, remove the fins and just throw them back in the water. It's illegal in this country."
Though the majority of shark killings happen in other countries, it's still effecting our coastal ecosystems.
"A lot of sharks are what they call highly migratory species," says Young. "Which makes them harder to manage because they cross state or national boundaries."
While it may seem like our population would be better off without sharks, Young says not having sharks would have a negative effect on our lives.
"Sharks are top predators and top predators help keep the balance and help keep in check the top competitors in the level below them. So if you remove those predators you lose a lot of diversity in the ecosystem and your whole community starts to look and act very different."

Wally:What Ryan failed to mention is the staggering statistics against ever being touched by a shark, let alone eat'n by one. In fact read below.

The article quotes an L.A. lifeguard who asserts that in spite of the ubiquitous fear of shark attacks in this country, "more people are killed in the United States each year by vending machines," which smacks of an urban legend, but isn't!

...statistics pertaining to vending machine deaths aren't as easy to come by as data on shark attack fatalities, so it's difficult to draw a direct comparison. But if we look at 1995, for example — the most recent year for which I was able to find an accounting of deaths due to vending machine tipovers — two people died as a result of being crushed by falling soda machines in the U.S., as compared to zero shark-related deaths in the same twelve-month period.
Moreover, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission there were 37 known vending machine fatalities between 1978 and 1995, for an average of 2.18 deaths per year. Over the past decade there were a total of six recorded shark attack fatalities in the U.S., for an average of .6 deaths per year. Ergo, barring a drastic reduction in the frequency of vending machine accidents since 1995, vending machines are indeed more deadly than sharks by a factor of almost four."

Wally: Of the over 375 different species of sharks found in the oceans, only about 30 have been reported to ever attack a human. The shark species responsible for most unprovoked attacks on humans are the Great White Shark, Tiger Shark and Bull Shark. These animals do not attack humans for sport. They misake them for seals. They have no interest in eating humans.

Some of Hollywood's "green" celebrities—Rosario Dawson, Ed Begley, Jr., and a bevy of starlets—thought they were promoting organic school gardens for inner-city kids.

But the Environmental Media Association (EMA) teamed them up with a secretive corporation, Kellogg Garden Products, whose main business is selling Los Angeles sewage sludge products!

That company calls its Kellogg brand "quality organics" and deceptively labels bags sold at the garden store as "garden soil" made from "compost"—with no mention of which products are made from industrial and human waste which contains tens of thousands of contaminants such as dioxin, PCBs, medical waste, industrial solvents and chemicals, heavy metals, endocrine disruptors, and flame retardants, among others. That's why federal law bars the use of sewage sludge-based products in organic gardens.

So, when news broke that Kellogg Garden Products provided sewage sludge products to EMA's "organic" school gardens—and its spokesperson even posed with sewage sludge-derived products at the gardens—you'd think EMA and its stars would cut all ties to the sludge industry.

But you'd be wrong. Instead of denouncing the contamination of the kids' gardens and the corporation's effort to "greenwash" its brand through associating with stars devoted to organic produce, EMA is sticking with its corporate donor. So far.

Help us tell Hollywood it's not green to partner with a company that put sewage sludge on school gardens and that sells this stuff without labeling it to say "This product is derived from sewage sludge."

The video, which also features "hungry villagers" butchering the elephant Parsons kills while wearing neon orange GoDaddy baseball caps [Warning: It's graphic footage, so you may not want to watch it if you're squeamish] is a must-see for anyone who thinks all modern CEOs spend their free time jawing on about how to save the world at Davos. It is a monument to the ability of mounds of cash to fill the part of a person's brain where self-reflection once was, and has predictably sparked mass internet outrage.

(Parson's response: "I kind of figured that this might happen. So be it, I'm not ashamed of what I did.")

But Bob Parsons' entire life is equally ridiculous. Here are some facts that might make this safari video make sense:

Parsons stars in a self-help video blog, released bi-monthly on his website. His sidekick in the elaborately-produced videos is a busty blonde named "Leann" who inexplicably breaks into fake gangsta slang at random times. Episode #35 of Parson's blog is called "How to grow STEEL BALLS (even if you're a woman)."
Parsons cannot get enough attention. Parsons lives according to 16 principles, including such revolutionary mantras as "take things a day at a time" and "solve your own problems."
Parsons' Twitter handle is Drbobparsons. But his bio states "Not a real doc." In fact, Parsons received an honorary doctorate of "Humane Letters" from the University of Maryland.

Oil Spill Safety Hoax "Irresponsible": Enbridge

Earlier today, the world learned of oil transport giant Enbridge’s strategy for handling inevitable oil spills along its proposed pipeline through pristine British Columbian wilderness: mop it up with human hair.
The cockamamie “MyHairCares” hoax, dreamed up by former oil workers and involving outreach to over 1000 hair salons, was promoted in a slick Video News Release and involved a flurry of conflicting press releases. The original story ran in a number of major news outlets (archive will be posted shortly here), but was pulled with no retraction or explanation after a terse denial by Enbridge that seemed to miss the point entirely. “This was a funny way to dramatize the fact that neither Enbridge nor any other oil company can prevent spills, and that they basically have no cleanup plan,” said Shannon McPhail, a former Canadian oil worker and Canadian spokesperson for People Enbridge Ruined in Michigan (PERM), the group responsible for MyHairCares. “What's happening in Michigan proves that.”
Between 1999 and 2008 Enbridge recorded an average of more than one oil spill every week. Just last summer, an Enbridge pipeline spilled more than 800,000 gallons of oil into Michigan's Kalamazoo River. Enbridge is expected to face federal criminal charges for neglecting to maintain that pipeline; they are also accused of merely covering up, not actually cleaning up the oil. Further, a joint investigation by the Center for Public Integrity and CBS News found that Enbridge was coercing Kalamazoo spill victims into signing liability waiver forms. “Enbridge is manipulating and exploiting people who trust the company to do the right thing,” said former US Congressman Jim Oberstar, D-Minn., Chairman of the House Transportation Committee.
“We don’t want Canadian rivers or coastlines to end up like the oily mess that Enbridge has left in a number of places around here,” said US PERM spokesperson Rick Smith.
“In the U.S. Enbridge failed to maintain their pipeline, failed to clean up their mess, and are exploiting the victims,” said McPhail. “It would be madness to let them build a pipeline in Canada, especially through one of our planet’s last great wildernesses.”
Enbridge’s proposed Northern Gateway Pipeline would cut across the Rocky Mountains, the pristine Great Bear rain forest, and over 1,000 streams and rivers. The pipeline would carry 700,000 barrels a day of petroleum products across 1,170 kilometres between Alberta’s Tar Sands and the Pacific Coast, where supertankers would carry the crude though the treacherous Douglas Channel—an area in which currents render conventional oil containment booms useless.
“A major spill on the coast or in a river would be devastating and irreversible,” said McPhail. “Canada must not trade in our wilderness just to make some foreign oil companies rich.”
One salon owner contacted after the ruse lauded the activists’ approach to getting the media to pay attention to one of the most pressing environmental issues in North America. "I wasn't tricked, I was educated,” said Brian Phillips, owner of World Salon in Toronto. “I had no idea what the people in Michigan were going through with Enbridge. We shouldn’t invite that treatment here in Canada.”
People Enbridge Ruined In Michigan (PERM) cooked up the “My Hair Cares” action with guidance from The Yes Men, as part of the Yes Lab for Creative Activism. Tomorrow, Canadian members of PERM will introduce themselves to the public during a noon press conference in front of Enbridge’s Vancouver offices. Free haircuts will available for all, and all clippings collected then (as well as any clippings mailed in by salons) will be donated to Michigan PERM members still struggling to clean up Enbridge’s mess in their community.
“Enbridge spends millions trying to convince people there's no problem,” noted McPhail. “We had to be a bit clever to compete with that.”

LONDON - Less than two months before a fairytale wedding anticipated by much of the world, Britain's royal family finds itself fighting an inconvenient distraction: revelations that Prince Andrew, the queen's second son, is friends with a convicted sex offender, was photographed with a teenage prostitute, and has been accused of ties to Moammar Gadhafi's Libyan regime.

The Duke of York also hosted the son of the Tunisian dictator shortly before a popular uprising drove him from power — and the buildup of embarrassment has sparked calls that he be stripped of his role as special U.K. trade representative.

Buckingham Palace is in damage control mode as it attempts to keep the public's focus on the April 29 wedding between Prince William and tabloid favourite Kate Middleton, his university sweetheart.

British officials have rallied to Andrew's defence. The foreign secretary expressed his "confidence" in Andrew on Sunday, and a U.K. trade official voiced support for the prince to remain in the position, saying he does a "very valuable job."

But pressure is mounting and there is growing speculation over how long Andrew can hang on to his post.

Andrew has courted trouble before: His much-publicized divorce from Sarah Ferguson, her subsequent missteps, massive debt, a tell-all interview and a videotaped attempt to sell a U.K. tabloid access to Andrew stand in stark contrast to the glow surrounding William and Kate Middleton's courtship and upcoming nuptials.

Since becoming a special trade representative in 2001, Andrew has also drawn criticism for reportedly taking lavish trips in his role as an unpaid trade ambassador.

The latest revelations in the British media have centred on Andrew's friendship with convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein and claims that Andrew also had close ties to Seif al-Islam Gadhafi, one of the Libyan leader's sons.

Photos recently published in the British media show Andrew strolling in a park with Epstein — the New York billionaire jailed for soliciting underage prostitutes in Florida. Most recently, a photograph emerged showing Andrew with his arm around the waist of the teenage prostitute at the centre of that case.

While there has been no suggestion of any wrongdoing on the part of Andrew, the sum of events has prompted some soul-searching over whether the prince is a suitable representative for U.K. interests abroad.

"The duke recognizes that his association with Jeffrey Epstein was, in retrospect, unwise," a person familiar with the matter said, noting that it can be understood Andrew will not be photographed with Epstein again anytime soon.

But that's not placating some who say enough is enough. Last week, British lawmaker Chris Bryant claimed that Andrew had close links to Seif Gadhafi. Bryant called for Andrew to be fired, telling the House of Commons, "Isn't it time we dispensed with the services of the Duke of York?"

Buckingham Palace on Sunday rejected Bryant's claims, saying Andrew's interactions with the Gadhafi regime — and Tunisia's ousted dictatorship, too— fell within the mandate of his job as special trade representative.

"It was part of the British government's engagement with Libya at the time," a palace spokesman said on customary condition of anonymity.

The spokesman confirmed Andrew met Moammar Gadhafi twice. Both meetings were of public record and should not come as news, the spokesman said, adding that Andrew is "fully committed to his role as special representative."

"It is understood that he has the support of the government behind him," the spokesman said.

Government officials backed up that claim Sunday, citing Andrew's role in nurturing business interests.

"The Duke of York has made a valuable contribution to British business," a spokesman for government trade body UKTI said. "We continue to support him," he added, on customary condition of anonymity.

Foreign Secretary William Hague also expressing his full confidence in Andrew's work.

"I'm not an expert in ... the embarrassments," Hague told the BBC. "But certainly I've seen around the world a lot of good that he has done for this country."

The defence secretary, Liam Fox, has confirmed that a "small diplomatic team" is in Benghazi to talk to Libyan rebels but refused to confirm reports that any British nationals had been detained.

According to Guardian sources, a suspected British intelligence and special forces unit, which arrived by helicopter about four days ago, was caught near the town of Khandra, about 20 miles west of Benghazi.
A senior member of Benghazi's revolutionary council said: "They were carrying espionage equipment, reconnaissance equipment, multiple passports and weapons. This is no way to conduct yourself during an uprising.
"Gaddafi is bringing in thousands of mercenaries to kill us, most are using foreign passports and how do we know who these people are?
"They say they're British nationals and some of the passports they have are British. But the Israelis used British passports to kill that man in Dubai last year."
Rebel leaders claimed the captives were being treated well and would be released as soon as the British government vouched for their identity with the rebel command.
The news follows Sunday Times claims that an SAS unit was being held by rebel forces it had approached in an attempt to open up diplomatic channels to opponents of Muammar Gaddafi.
Fox refused to give any more details on the diplomatic team's mission in the eastern area of the country, which is controlled by rebel forces: "We are in touch with them but I'm not going to be giving further comment on that."

Whitehall sources said on Friday it needed to learn more about the leadership of the anti-Gaddafi forces and find out what logistical support they needed, but would not give arms to the rebels, as an international arms embargo was in place.

Fox said: "It is a very difficult situation to be able to understand in detail. There are a number of different opposition groups to Colonel Gaddafi in Libya who do seem relatively disparate.

"We want to clearly understand what the dynamic is here because we want to be able to work with them to ensure the demise of the Gaddafi regime, to see a transition to greater stability in Libya and ultimately to more representative government.
"So getting a picture of that is relatively difficult, as is widely reported. Communications are being interrupted, there are difficulties with mobile phones, with the internet potentially being interfered with.
"So we are trying to build a picture – it's essential that the government does that and it's essential that all western governments do that so we are able to get a clearer idea of what we are able to do in terms of helping the people of Libya."
The Sunday Times reported Libyan and British sources confirming the SAS unit had been detained by rebel forces it had approached to secure a meeting with a junior diplomat to offer help in their fight against Gaddafi. The mission backfired when rebel leaders in Benghazi objected to foreign interference from governments which had not yet formally recognised them as Libya's legitimate rulers, it said.
Spokesmen for the Ministry of Defence and the Foreign Office refused to confirm or deny the Sunday Times report.
The international development secretary, Andrew Mitchell, refused to comment about the SAS unit when questioned on Radio 5 Live.
When asked if it was possible a diplomat was there for talks, he replied: "It is perfectly possible that the Foreign Office will be trying to open links with all the rebel forces there."
The foreign secretary, William Hague, urged Gaddafi to put an "immediate stop" to the use of armed force against Libyans.
"Given the continued levels of illegitimate violence within Libya we call upon Colonel Gaddafi to put an immediate stop to the use of armed force against the Libyan people," he said.
"He must hand over power without delay to a government which fully recognises the legitimate aspirations of the Libyan people.
"The UK reiterates its support for the transition to a government that will deliver greater democracy, justice, transparency, human rights and accountability in Libya."

Heavy gunfire has erupted in Tripoli, with hundreds of Gaddafi's supporters pouring into the streets. Libyan authorities said the gunfire was to celebrate the recapture of cities including Ras Lanuf.

Oh they are "diplomats"! Never mind then.

So Here's The Story About The Supposed "Kings Of Rock".

Now after five years, I finally have found web pages that shows proof positive that what I wrote about years ago. It's the ugly truth about this rock quartet.

I'm am also borrowing pages from "Nash The Slash's" web site...

In the late 60's and the early 70's their was 3 huge bands "The Beatles" , "The Rolling Stones", and a new kid on the block "Led Zeppelin". I was a fan of all three and so were all my buds. These three bands controlled the teen world. Who knew at the time where the lyrics and music they made really came from? We kind'a knew the "Stones" borrowed heavily from the early blues legends Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters...etc... We never knew how much they "borrowed"?

I was listening to the "Howard Stern Show" in March. He had a writer on that wrote some book. Da guy was Timothy English. The book was "Sounds Like Teen Spirit". Stern and the gang were talk'n about how surprised they were at who stole what from who. Gary ("Ba Ba Boey") said "Led Zeppelin's" whole catalogue was in question? In fact the new liner notes were being changed on the "Best Of Led Zeppelin". They were change'n the song writing credits from "Page & Plant" to whoever they ripped-off. The Biggest news was the classic Rock song of all time, the one everyone knows as "the song" of this era, was a compete rip-off! Ya know what song I'm talk'n about don'tcha? Do I have'ta write it dude? OK... "Stairway To Heaven". I know what your think'n . "NO WAY DUDE"! Ya Way Dude!

Back in the early 1970's my friends listened to all kinds of Rock music. We really enjoyed a little known band from da U.S. This Rock band had a record that reached platinum in Canada. It was was recorded in 1970 and produced by legendary producer David Briggs (Neil Young's producer). This classic album wasn't really that well received in the U.S. To be fair it kind'a didn't get air play there. It did north of da boarder. A underground station in Toronto started play'n it heavily around 1971. The bands name is "Spirit" and the albums title was "The Twelve Dreams Of Doctor Sardonicus". I know what your think'n, what does "Spirit" have'ta do with "Zeppelin"? Plenty. In the late 60's they toured together. It seems Page & Plant kind'a took a'like'n to a certain song "Spirit" performed nightly. "Taurus" was the song they coveted. "Stairway To Heaven" is a replica of "Taurus". The cord progression in "Stairway To Heaven" is also incredibly similar to a song by the "Chocolate Watch Band", "And She's Lonely." This is another similarity. They just so happened to have toured with this group also! I would love to say this is all a coincidence , but these coincidences happen way to often with those two artists, Page & Plant. As a matter of fact I think Jimmy Page has stolen Randy California's (he wrote Taurus) way of playing guitar. I'll say something else I think all royalties from "Stairway To Heaven" should be paid to the family of Randy California . Unfortunately Randy died along with his son, in a swimming accident in Hawaii .
Here is a short list of songs Zeppelin ripped-off completely or "borrowed from".

Now who would believe they would rip-off folk singers? Well they did!
"Babe I’m Gonna Leave You" sung by Joan Baez...became "Good Times, Bad Times". "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" was stolen from folk singer Anne Bredon the writer. Through legal action the liner note has been changed to "Bredon/Page/Plant" .
"How Many More Times" ; The 1st. half the song is rip'd from Howlin' Wolf .The 2nd. half rip'd from a Albert King song "The Hunter" .
"The Lemon Song" ; Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor" . They should just call the band "Howlin' Wolf" they rip'd' off this dude so much !
"Moby Dick" ; Sleepy John Estes's "The Girl I Love" .
"Whole Lotta Love" Lyrics and music written be Steve Marriott From "The Small Faces" He was paid off back in the 70's to shut-up about it . Trouble was Steve Marriott borrowed and gave credit to Willie Dixon's "You Need Love"... Zeppelin did neither!
They also "borrowed" Willie's "I Can’t Quit You Baby". They didn't even bother to change the title, they were so brazen!
The list of songs goes On & On & On...

This isn't Led Zeppelin borrowing or paying homage to forgotten artists. This is stealing music fret by fret, note be note, lyric by lyric! To fool yourself thinking it's any other thing would be a disservice to yourself, your youth and the artist that they stole from. Once Plant and Page put their names on the liner notes...That's it, the song has been plagiarized!

I wrote at the top of this post I would give proof to this story and here it is.

Also "Nash The Slash's" pages on Led Zeppelin, Steve Marroitt and the band "Spirit".

Sadly, the fantastic movie Kick-Ass never really took off at the box office, but apparently it may have inspired new real-life "superheroes" without any actual powers to try and clean up the streets. The Seattle Post Intelligencer reports that a group calling themselves the Rain City Super Hero Movement as sprouted up, with nine ordinary folks donning costumes and going by such names as Thorn, Buster Doe, Green Reaper, Gemini, No Name, Catastrophe, Thunder 88, Penelope and Phoenix Jones the Guardian of Seattle.

Despite their good intentions, the Seattle cops say these seekers of justice are incredibly lucky that none of them have been seriously hurt yet. One "superhero" was almost shot while running out of a dark park and another group, who were wearing ski masks in a Kia, alarmed a witness who thought they were going to rob a gas station. Apparently the Kia was registered to one of the vigilante's godmother, who told the cops that she goes around the city doing good deeds.

It seems these ordinary heroes even have a few nemesis' as well, with Captain Ozone and Knight Owl, other costumed people, not being a part of the group. Phoenix Jones the Guardian of Seattle, who revealed his real identity to the police, also doesn't want just anybody taking to the streets with a mask. Here's what he told the site:

"I don't condone people walking around on the street with masks. Everyone on my team either has a military background or a mixed martial arts background, and we're well aware of what its costs to do what we do."

That's swell, but there's more. They are all a part of a national "organization" called the Real Life Superheroes movement. Look they have a website and everything. I wonder if these guys have Facebook pages yet... and if so, I hope they take suggestions for better superhero names...

Short note: Phoenix Jones and his whole gang of Real Life Super-Heroes all have Facebook pages. I talked to him last week and he told me he had a Brown Belt In MMA style karate. I informed him my daughter also has her Brown Belt in MMA style fighting. He seemed impressed with her accomplishment. He asked if I wanted to go out with him on patrol, which kind'a surprised me at first. Then it made more sense to me. He really isn't doing this for fame, he really cares and wants to make a difference in his community. That impressed me more than any other action. I told him I lived in Eastern Canada. He still said I was always invited to join if I was ever in the area. Nice guy, this kid is fer sure!

There is also another crew of crime fighters. They belong to a fairly large group of Super-Heroes that is associated across America.
The group is called, funny enuff... Real Life Superheroes. or RLSH.

The Scientology Expose We've Been Waiting For

New Yorker staff writer and Looming Tower author Lawrence Wright is writing what his agent calls "the most profound reckoning to date" with Scientology, told through the eyes of director and apostate Paul Haggis. This should be good.
Haggis spent 35 years as a Scientologist before angrily and publicly ditching the cult in 2009 after he became convinced that leader David Miscavige is a violent nut. He hasn't spoken publicly about Scientology since, but a "blown" celebrity (to use the Scientological term for leaving the fold) like Haggis is Scientology's worst possible nightmare—it can smear and threaten rank-and-file detractors all it wants, but when one of its former leading lights is making the charges, it's harder to strike back.

Wright is a meticulous and muscular reporter, so the two men collaborating to tell the story of Scientology from the inside will be a very big deal. The book, which doesn't have a publisher yet, will be called The Heretic of Hollywood: Paul Haggis vs.The Church of Scientology and will explore both founder L. Ron Hubbard's life and Haggis' personal investigation into Miscavige's violence, the enslavement of "Sea Org" volunteers, and forced abortions for church workers, according to a catalog from Wright's agent Andrew Wylie [pdf] that was pointed out to us by a tipster. Wright has mentioned the project before in interviews, and indicated that it grew out of a New Yorker story that hasn't yet run.

It will be interesting to see whether Scientology's counterintelligence and disinformation machinery will be up to the challenge of undermining a project like this: Back in the 1970s, the cult actually managed to infiltrate the private life of Paulette Cooper, author of The Scandal of Scientology, with a stooge acting as her best friend in a failed effort to frame her and drive her to suicide. So Wright might want to be careful about making any new friends for the next few years.

WikiLeaks has published a secret U.S. State Department list of key infrastructure sites in foreign countries — including dozens in Canada — that Washington considers vital to the national security of the United States.

The list of "critical infrastructure" and "key resources" located outside the U.S. was put together as part of a State Department order to compile an inventory of foreign sites whose loss could "critically impact" the public health or security of the U.S.
According to a February 2009 cable sent to U.S. embassies and consulates around the world, U.S. diplomats were instructed to update an existing list of foreign sites that could seriously harm the U.S. if they were targeted by terrorists or destroyed by other means.
Canadian sites on the 2008 list include such things as the Darlington and Pickering nuclear power plants east of Toronto, a number of international rail crossings and bridges, oil and gas pipelines, the James Bay hydroelectric project in Quebec, the Hibernia Atlantic undersea cable landing in Halifax, several dams, a number of mines, and several factories producing everything from missile parts to plasma to vaccines.
The cable includes hundreds of other strategic sites in all regions of the world. According to the diplomatic note, the order to update the list was aimed at strengthening "national preparedness, timely response, and rapid recovery in the event of an attack, natural disaster or other emergency."

WikiLeaks' publication of the list has increased official criticism of the whistleblowing website for providing a virtual "wish list" of potential targets for would-be terrorists.

"This is further evidence that [WikiLeaks has] been generally irresponsible, bordering on criminal," former British foreign secretary Malcolm Rifkind was quoted in British media reports. "This is the kind of information terrorists are interested in knowing," he said.

This is just the latest in a series of embarrassing leaks that have caused concern and anger in many world capitals in recent days. WikiLeaks began releasing more than 250,000 classified U.S. State Department cables more than a week ago.

Many of them have included unflattering U.S. diplomats' private assessments of foreign leaders.

Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has accused George W. Bush of lying in his recently-published memoir, Decision Points. Mr. Bush wrote in the book that on January 31, 2002, during an meeting in the Oval Office, he told Mr. Schroeder that he was determined to make diplomacy with Iraq work, but if those efforts failed, he would invade Iraq. Mr. Bush quotes Mr. Schroeder as responding, "What is true of Afghanistan is true of Iraq. Nations that sponsor terror must face consequences. If you make it fast and decisive, I will be with you." Mr. Bush wrote that Mr. Schroeder was guilty of betraying him on that count, because Germany opposed war in favor of continued inspections for weapons of mass destruction. Mr. Schroeder responded to the passage in Mr. Bush's memoir by saying that Mr. Bush did not tell him the truth. Mr. Schreoder confirms that he told Mr. Bush that he would "stand reliably on the side of the U.S." if it was confirmed that Iraq was sheltering the terrorists who were responsible for the September 11 attacks. "But this link, as it became clear during 2002, was false and contrived," Mr. Schroeder says. "This goes for the reasons [for the invasion] given by Bush and Cheney too ... As we know today, the Bush administration's reasons for the Iraq war were based on lies."

Toronto is the most miserable city in Canada: Study

A study conducted by the Canadian Centre for the Study of Living Standards has concluded what many Canadians have long believed: That Toronto is the most miserable city in the country.
Despite having the country's largest GDP and population, the megacity ranks lowest on the happiness scale. The study used data from the Canadian Community Health Survey for 2007 and 2008 to determine the happiness of various regions of Canada and the factors which contribute to the variation.
While Toronto came in at the bottom of the list (Sherbrooke, Que., was at the top), citizens of the megacity can take comfort in the fact, on average, they remain a fairly happy bunch. Toronto scored a 4.15 out of 5 on the happiness scale while Sherbrooke scored a 4.37. This means citizens in the happiest city were only about 5.5 per cent happier than in the least contented.
The study also hinted at the reasons for Toronto's relative unhappiness. A key finding of the study is that "the most important reason for geographical variation in happiness in Canada is differences in the sense of belonging to local communities, which is generally higher in small CMAs, rural areas, and Atlantic Canada."
Stress was also an important determinant of happiness, something found in great abundance on Toronto subways and highways each morning. And while household income did help with happiness, the benefits it offered were scant. A 10 per cent increase in income increased the number of people "very satisfied with life" by just 0.6 per cent.
The report suggests Canada consider a new metric for measuring success, one originally championed by the tiny Buddhist nation of Bhutan and now taken up by France and the United Kingdom: Gross national happiness.
The new index would give Canadians something to feel good about while our GDP continues to stagnate.

Usually when the media reports about an outcry about a product. Who Really Cares? Nobody it's a SCaM!

This time it wasn't "New Coke". It was a lame attempt to sell us that the "Gap" was change'n their logo.
What's a real "tell" to da con is this awful "new logo".
What's the real story here? This is all a bad attempt at selling to us child made goods. The Gap clothing empire, which entails: Baby Gap, Old Navy & The Banana Republic, has been the worst offender of child labour laws. This company has been caught on numerous occasions of direct violations of using slave children to make their crap.

Now who would in their right mind care if the "Gap Logo" has changed? Let alone be "Outraged"? What the media should be report'n about is that The Gap has been losing sales ever since being caught. That's what America is really "Outraged" about! At least the Americans that are informed.
The news of the Gap's atrocities a few years ago sent the then major clothing company into a sales and stock market spiral downward. The Gap still uses the same way of making goods. They use contracted manufacturers in India, Indonesia, China, Asia & Africa. They also switch companies more rapidly to cover their tracks to keep the unregulated media at bay.

NEW DELHI – With Gap Inc. under fire for selling clothes made by children in India, activists and police raided a sweatshop in New Delhi where 14 boys were embroidering women's garments yesterday, illustrating the widespread problem of child labour in the country.
The children were as young as 10, came from a poor farming district on the other side of the country, and said they had never been given promised wages for working up to 15 hours a day embroidering sequins onto the flowing saris worn by Indian women.
The working and living conditions in the sweatshop just houses from where the Gap clothes were being made were grim – the boys were packed into a filthy room, sleeping on the same floor where they sewed all day.
"I don't want my money any more. Now I want to go home," said a thin 15-year-old boy who gave his name only as Hatiquallah.
Speaking at a nearby police station after the raid, Hatiquallah said he had been brought to New Delhi three years ago by a man who promised him work – and money. He never told his parents he was leaving.
"I was waiting for my wages," he replied when asked why he stayed. "I don't want them now.''
India's transformation in the past decade into an emerging global economic power has done little to alleviate the country's widespread poverty – and the problems that go along with it, such as child labour.
The government estimates 13 million children work here, many of them in hazardous industries, such as glass making, where such labour has long been banned. Rights activists place the number as high as 60 million – one estimate has 20 per cent of India's economy dependent on kids under the age of 14.
The scope of the problem was clear yesterday in the warren of narrow and dark alleys in New Delhi's Shahpur Jat neighbourhood, where the sari sweatshop was found just a few houses down from the now-shuttered operation that made Gap clothes.
"Every other house is like this – there are children working in small garment units," said a police officer involved in the raid, Birpal Singh. Police said they believed the saris were for sale within India.
But the widespread use of child labour in India and the discovery that kids were making clothes for the Gap, which has 90 full-time inspectors who travel around the world, raises questions for India's garment exporting industry, a $10 billion a year business that grew by more than 20 per cent last year.
Some of the biggest names in retailing make clothes in India, from Ralph Lauren to J.C. Penney. They all say that oversight of contractors is strict, but child's rights activists disagree.
"International companies hire subcontractors and then forget about it. There is no monitoring at all," said Bhuwan Ribhu, a lawyer who works with Bachpan Bachao Andolan, or the Save Childhood Movement.
For the kids themselves, the issue is not as clear cut as many outside India would imagine – many poor children are expected to work.
Sanjeev, an 11-year-old rescued yesterday from the sweatshop, said his parents had sent him off to work in New Delhi two years ago. He had not heard from or seen them since, and was worried they would be upset with him for not sending any money home. "But I never got my wages," he said.
Yesterday's raid came a day after Britain's Observer newspaper reported that children as young as 10 were found sewing clothes for the Gap in a New Delhi factory. It quoted the children as saying they had been sold to the sweatshop by their impoverished families and were not paid.
Vowing not to carry any products produced at the factory, Gap Inc., which operates 3,100 stores throughout the world, fired the subcontractor responsible for the abuse. It said none of the products made at the factory will be sold in its stores.
Indian officials offered no comment on the Observer report.
But child's rights activists said it was just a small part of a bigger problem, as evidenced by yesterday's raid.
"The biggest responsibility here lies with the Indian government – they don't develop a way of monitoring" factories, said Ribhu, the lawyer.
Ribhu said he would push authorities to return the children to their families in eastern India...

Ex-'Canadian Idol' Contestant Detained On Terrorism Charges

Usually it's mass-entertainment fare that's supposed to be ripped from the headlines - TV shows aren't supposed to make serious news.
But in what seems like a real-life version of the 2006 war-on-terror satire "American Dreamz," a Canadian of Pakistani descent who auditioned for "Canadian Idol" two years ago has been detained in a terrorism investigation that has connected him to "high-level Al Qaeda affiliates abroad."

The Toronto Star reports that Khuram Sher, a Canadian doctor who graduated from Montreal's McGill University, was arrested Thursday morning as part of a wide-ranging yearlong terrorism investigation by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service. Sher is the third arrest so far in the probe, which Canadian officials say involves a cell of radical Islamists with ties to senior al-Qaida figures. Reports on the investigation have provided no details about what, if any, specific plans or targets the cell had been pursuing.
In 2008, according to the Star, Sher tried out for a slot on "Canadian Idol" wearing a beard and traditional Pakistani garb. He sang an a capella rendition of Avril Lavigne's "Complicated" - he also said he could sing Hilary Duff songs - while dancing and doing the moonwalk. In the "Canadian Idol" appearance, Sher claimed to have recently emigrated from Pakistan, but the Star says that was a put-on: He was born in Canada. (That's footage of his audition above.)
Midafternoon-HBO enthusiasts will recall that "American Dreamz," a 2006 film starring Dennis Quaid and Mandy Moore, features a plot by jihadists to assassinate the president during a visit to the set of an "American Idol"-ish singing contest. Their plan was to outfit a buffoonish Muslim contestant with a suicide belt.

A court-appointed arbitrator recently blocked Dimitrios Biller – a former Toyota defense lawyer – from releasing 6,000 documents allegedly proving a Toyota safety cover-up, but those documents will likely come into the public light next week at a House committee hearing.
The House Oversight Committee has officially issued a subpoena for Biller’s 6,000 documents that allegedly prove a safety “conspiracy” within Toyota. Although the California court system recently barred Biller from releasing the information, the House subpoena supersedes previous court rulings.

“The injunction doesn’t prevent Mr. Biller from complying with his legal obligations,” Biller’s attorney, Jeffrey Allen, said. The documents are to be delivered by February 23, one day before a House hearing on Toyota’s safety concerns is set to begin.

Toyota has not revealed if it will fight the subpoena in court.

Although Biller’s documents don’t involve Toyota’s latest unintended acceleration problems, they reportedly show a long history of the Japanese automaker destroying and burying evidence involving safety issues. Biller defended Toyota in a number of rollover lawsuits from 2003-2007.

“Toyota does not believe it has to follow orders or turn over documents,” Biller said earlier this month. “They just don’t think the rules apply to them.”

The contents of Biller’s documents could be made public as early as Wednesday.

Secret Toyota records subpoenaed by U.S. House committee:

WASHINGTON -- A House panel today subpoenaed confidential internal documents that a former Toyota Motor Corp. lawyer has said show that the automaker destroyed legal evidence about SUV rollover accidents.

The House Oversight Committee issued the subpoena as part of its investigation into Toyota's problems with unintended acceleration. It has scheduled a Feb. 24 hearing at which Toyota President Akio Toyoda agreed today to testify.

The subpoena was issued to former Toyota lawyer Dimitrios Biller, who worked at Toyota's North American headquarters in Torrance, Calif., managing rollover cases from 2003 to 2007.

A week ago, Toyota won a temporary injunction from a court-appointed arbitrator that barred Biller from releasing the documents.

Biller's attorney, Jeffrey Allen of Santa Monica, Calif., said he intends to comply with the subpoena and ship the documents to the House committee by the required deadline of Feb. 23, the day before the hearing.
Both the committee and Allen said that the congressional subpoena trumps the partial preliminary injunction issued by the court-appointed arbitrator.

“The injunction doesn't prevent Mr. Biller from complying with his legal obligations,” Allen said in an interview.

Biller has about 6,000 Toyota documents in four, 18-inch bank boxes, Allen said. He declined to say who has possession of the documents or where they are located.

Undecided

A Toyota spokeswoman didn't say whether the company intends to go to court to try to block the congressional subpoena.

Allen said he contacted Toyota's lawyers today and sent them a copy of the subpoena.

Biller was sued by Toyota for allegedly divulging confidential information after he left the company. The company is seeking $33.5 million in damages, Allen said.

Biller, who is in his late 40s, then filed a racketeering suit alleging Toyota destroyed engineering and testing evidence related to more than 300 rollover suits.

“There is clear evidence that Toyota was withholding and destroying documents necessary in litigation and necessary to present to” the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Allen said.

In a recent interview with ABC News, Biller said, “You have to understand that Toyota in Japan does not have any respect for our legal system … they did not have any respect for our laws.”

While Biller still worked for Toyota, he spent four days in Japan trying to bring his concerns to the attention of senior headquarters executives, Allen said.

Biller was rebuffed and driven to resign, the lawyer said. He received a severance package.

While Toyota succeeded in preventing Biller from going public with the confidential documents, the arbitrator did not require him to return the documents or provide an inventory of which ones he had, Allen said.

As Toyota Motor Corp. scrambles to contain its sudden-acceleration crisis, another potential blow to the automaker's credibility is lurking in the form of a former Toyota attorney who is accusing the automaker in federal court of concealing safety issues from the public.
A ruling expected soon in the suit could make public thousands of internal Toyota documents that show the company conspired to hide evidence in court, according to Dimitrios Biller, who defended Toyota in product liability
Biller, of Pacific Palisades, alleged in a federal lawsuit filed last summer that the automaker has a long history of hiding and destroying evidence as part of a strategy orchestrated from company headquarters in Toyota City, Japan.
Toyota and Biller have been involved in a tangle of litigation in state and federal courts for months, centered on 6,000 internal documents obtained by Biller. He says the documents show a pattern of illegal behavior in which Toyota fraudulently withheld evidence in product liability cases.
At Toyota's urging, the documents have been kept confidential by court order since last summer. But now a California arbitrator is considering whether they can be made public. Attorneys for Toyota and Biller made their final filings in the matter last week, and a decision is expected soon.
If the arbitrator rules in Biller's favor, a legion of plaintiff's attorneys are waiting to reopen long-closed cases against Toyota.
Although the allegations don't directly concern Toyota's growing sudden-acceleration headache, the Biller case is another assault on the automaker's credibility, which has taken a hit in the current crisis.
"Toyota is a very secretive corporation," Biller, 47, said in an interview. "It doesn't believe anybody outside the corporation deserves to know what is going on inside, even if it kills somebody."
Toyota denies Biller's allegations and contends that any attempts on his part to reveal documents would be a violation of a $3.9-million severance agreement he signed with the company.
"Mr. Biller is legally bound not to reveal documentation he acquired when he was in our employ," said Celeste Migliore, a Toyota spokeswoman.
But attorneys who have been involved in litigation with Toyota are watching every movecases until 2007.

And More Recently:
A lawsuit filed Monday accuses Toyota Motor Corp. of knowing its vehicles had electronic problems long before several high-profile acceleration incidents that prompted world-wide recalls.
The complaint, filed in federal court in Santa Ana, Calif., alleges that Toyota knew its vehicles with electronic throttles were more likely to experience sudden acceleration than its vehicles without them and that the company has known for years it needed to install brake-override systems to halt the problem.
The new allegations are outlined in a 167-page complaint seeking class-action status before federal Judge James Selna. It is the product of the consolidation of dozens of economic suits that aim to hold Toyota responsible for a drop in resale value that stemmed from reports of its vehicles speeding out of control.
Toyota faces an investigation by a federal grand jury and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission into sudden-acceleration incidents and braking-system issues. It said last month it also had been subpoenaed by a federal grand jury for problems with steering in its vehicles. It has recalled about eight million vehicles world-wide because of sudden-acceleration problems.
A Toyota spokesman, Mike Michels, said the company rejects claims that plaintiffs suffered economic damages because of the recent recalls.
"To date, plaintiffs have not cited a specific cause that would support their claim of a defect in Toyota's Electronic Throttle Control System, and no credible scientific theory or proof has been advanced to support this allegation," Mr. Michels said. "Toyota firmly believes that the system is completely safe."
The suit seeks to have Toyota pay owners the drop in value of their vehicles caused by the bad publicity and other issues surrounding the sudden-acceleration incidents as well as pay unspecified damages. It also seeks to force Toyota to pay a fine and install brake-override systems in all its vehicles with electronic throttles. Toyota already has said it will install brake overrides in certain models.
Billions of dollars could be at stake for Toyota if plaintiffs succeed. Steve Berman, a Seattle partner in law firm Hagens Berman, who filed the suit, estimates the class to be as large as 40 million people. A separate body of litigation includes wrongful-death claims, which could also end up costing Toyota millions of dollars.
The plaintiffs' allegations in the suit were found in emails and reports culled from the more than 43,000 documents Toyota produced as part of the federal civil case. The documents, which also had been turned over to Congress, include material that Toyota said was personal information about owners—and so was blacked out. Attorneys last week received 23,000 more documents they have yet to look over.
The case is only in the initial stages and plaintiffs face many challenges. For instance, the U.S. Department of Transportation has said it has no evidence of flaws, in early testing, of Toyota's electronic-throttle control systems.
Monday's suit cites a 2004 email from a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigator to a Toyota official with a chart showing that Camrys with electronically controlled throttles had received five times as many complaints of sudden acceleration than those with manually controlled throttles.
The suit describes a "field technical report" of an incident when Toyota's technicians investigating a customer complaint of sudden acceleration experienced it themselves, and decided to buy back the vehicle. The incident wasn't reported to the NHTSA, the complaint said.
It also cites a September 2009 internal email apparently circulated among Toyota engineers indicating that Toyota had talked about taking action in 2007 to halt unintended acceleration by installing "a fail safe option similar to that used by other companies to prevent unintended acceleration," the email said. The option wasn't installed.
And the suit cites an internal email suggesting that Toyota was trying to keep engineers with knowledge of electronics problems from meeting with the NHTSA. "If the engineer who knows the failures well attends the meeting, NHTSA will ask a bunch of questions…I want to avoid such situation," reads the February 2007 email from Toyota employee Michiteru Kato to Chris Santucci, who is Toyota's liaison with U.S. regulators.
Mr. Santucci didn't respond to a request for comment; Mr. Kato couldn't be reached.
